Next round of PRT service adjustments in effect June 16 impacting nearly 45 routes and Red Line

On June 16, 2024, slight modifications to nearly 45 bus routes and the temporary closure of the Red Line highlight Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s next round of service adjustments. Most service adjustments include some weekday/weekend trip time changes to improve on-time performance.

Much of the Red Line will be closed from Sunday, June 16 through the end of August to accommodate several safety-critical projects that were announced in March. Riders should anticipate significant delays.

To supplement access to and from Beechview, Dormont, Mt. Lebanon, Castle Shannon, and other South Hills communities, PRT will operate a free rail shuttle and two free temporary bus routes:

  • The 37-Castle Shannon will operate every 30 minutes from the Castle Shannon Park and Ride and travel to Station Square via Castle Shannon Boulevard and West Liberty Avenue. Riders can then transfer to bus or light-rail to downtown and the North Shore.
  • The 42-Potomac will operate every 30 minutes (every 20 minutes from 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m.) from Potomac Station to Station Square via Broadway Avenue and West Liberty Avenue.
  • A Red Line Rail Shuttle will operate between Dormont Junction and Overbrook Junction.

For more information about the construction work, visit the PRT website's Red Line Construction page. According to PRT, this project combines multiple projects that were initially intended to be completed separately, but have been included in one shutdown to streamline operations, maximize efficiency, and minimize disruptions to passengers while enhancing the overall reliability and safety of this critical transit corridor.

Red Line Construction Schedule is as follows (according to PRT as of 5/21/24):

  • May 16 - June 15, 2024: Beginning at 8pm May 16, crews will be replacing tracks and concrete at a grade crossing at Willow Street. Because of its location, this work will impact all three rail lines. The exact details of the detours are still being finalized.
  • June 16 - July 14, 2024: Crews will be replacing tracks and concrete at a grade cross at Alfred Street. Rail cars will single-track between Overbrook Junction and Dormont Junction.
  • June 16 - August 31, 2024: The Red Line will be closed from Overbrook Junction to South Hills Junction to accommodate several rail projects. During this closure, all Red Line trips will be detoured via the Blue Line and will be renamed “Blue Line” to avoid confusion.
